User Agreements
Institutional Agreements Required to Access DOE National User Facilities
A User Agreement MUST be executed by the appropriate officer(s) at the user's institution BEFORE users can access our user facilities or participate in any experiments at SLAC. A single User Agreement covers all experimenters from that institution, so the signing official must have the authority to complete the user agreement on behalf of their scientists. The institution official is often the Dean, President, Director of Research, Development, Contracts, Grants, Sponsored Programs, or Technology Transfer.
In recognition of the nation's expanding need to engage businesses and universities in the areas of commercial and basic science research, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has developed two special types of agreements for use at all DOE National Laboratories with designated user facilities: for Non-Proprietary Research and for Proprietary Research (Review general conditions and advance payment requirements for proprietary research).
Non-Proprietary User Agreement
(General User Agreement; no cost for general users)
Proprietary User Agreement
(For Confidential or Proprietary Research; also requires advance payment)
Important Note: Please review the general comments that answer frequently asked questions. We have very limited flexibility to modify the DOE templates. Any changes must be approved by SLAC and the DOE which will likely delay user access to the user facility. In instances where DOE Contracting Officer approval for substantive changes cannot be obtained, Work for Others (WFOs) and Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs) may be alternatives.
Before any scheduled beam time, enter the institution name in the agreement, have the authorized institution official sign, and return the completed agreement by email or mail to:

If a user agreement is not executed in advance, scientists will not be able to visit or participate in user experiments at SSRL. Check the list below to confirm if a current user agreement exists with your institution, or contact URA at 650-926-3191/2087.
